Featured Coffee: Talor Made Purple Rain

Purple Rain is a natural process coffee from Indonesia and roasted by Talor Made in Norway. Their packaging did not include any tasting notes, however it did include the grape emoji (which turned out to be very accurate — see below). We chose to brew this coffee on the Kone with a 1:15 ratio of coffee to water.

Our recipe:

20g coffee — medium grind
300g water — just off boil

30 second bloom (50g)
Finished pouring at 2:00
Finished draining at 2:35

Tasting notes:

This coffee is wild! Straightaway, the dry aroma is 100% red grape. That flavor profile holds up in the cup as well — the best way to describe this coffee is "boozy grape juice." Deep grape flavors intermingle with the funky flavors you may expect from a natural process and this country of origin — subtle hints of barnyard, booze, and vegetal notes. That said, the coffee is so clean and sweet that these flavors, which could be considered "off" in a different context, only contribute to its complexity, and nicely compliment the sweet grape profile.

Our take:

We loved this. The cup borders on being somewhat one-dimensional (don't buy this if you don't love grape juice), but it is rounded out by just the right amount of boozy, funky, fermented flavors.
